Unfortunately we live in a throw away society in the United States. It is said that the average American throws away approximately 65 pounds of clothing every year. 65 pounds! When you add in other textiles, the total for the entire United States soars to 13.1 million tons! Yikes! This is clearly a significant problem that we all need to be concerned about.
I was recently contacted by Second String, a company that is taking their concern and transforming it into action! At Second String they upcycle second hand t-shirts, giving them a second chance at life. Each t-shirt is one-of-a-kind and is handpicked and handprinted right in NYC. The mission of Second String is to
… help save the planet one tee at a time. Purchasing just one of our tees in place of a new tee can save tons of water, energy, and other natural resources. Two steps further -a portion of our proceeds are donated to conservation and sustainability programs with a focus on recycling.
There are three shirt options available; Second Chance, Second Nature and Second to None (all pictured below). I was lucky enough to be given one of the Second Nature t-shirts from Second String and I love it! It is so soft and comfy, and I love knowing that I got a cool new shirt that actually helps the planet!
